Don Bachardy on Christopher Isherwood

Huntington Library Archivist Sue Hodson and painter Don Bachardy worked on the recently published collection of Isherwood’s diaries from the 1960s. They spoke in December 2010 at the Hammer Museum about what critics thought of Isherwood’s move to L.A., and gay life in mid-century Southern California. When Bachardy was asked what it was like to hide his homosexuality during the 1950s, he smiled and said “It was like living in a glamorous criminal underworld!”
