Josef von Sternberg house (Richard Neutra, 1935; demolished, 1971) Northridge,CA
Neutra’s dramatic modernist villa– featuring aluminum, mirrors, and moats– was sited in ” a distant meadow, in the midst of an empty landscape” AKA the San Fernando Valley. During the 1940s, the property was acquired by Ayn “Fountainhead” Rand; in 1971, a real estate developer razed the house to make way for a new suburban tract.
