Machine Project @ Hammer Museum – Artist In Residence Report
The Hammer Museum launched its Artist In Residence (A.I.R.) program in 2009 with the year-long residency of Machine Project, an Echo-Park-based collective and alternative art space. Serving as a collaborative and co-investigative endeavor between Hammer Museum staff and Machine Project’s bevy of artists and creators, the aim of the project was to seek out new ways to activate The Hammer both as an art museum and public space. The residency resulted in 26 projects featuring a total of over 300 participating artists, including micro-concerts, needlepoint therapy workshops, coordinated museum nap-time, poetry readings, live-action role-playing and table tennis. This report collects descriptions of all included projects as well as interviews with, and essays by, key members involved in the massive undertaking and fruitful results of the institutional collaboration.
