Marie Orensanz, “Limitada (Limited)” (1978/2013)

Mari Nalte Orensanz was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 1936. In 1972, a gallery owner assumed she was a man before his studio visit with her. He told her that the fact that she was a woman was detrimental to her work. She then added the letter e to her first name, and became “Marie Orensanz.” This incident marked her awareness of gender bias in the art world.
