Coming Out at Night
Last updated: September 5, 2024
Coming Out At Night is a collection of art and media surrounding the history and ephemeral nature of LGBTQ+ bar and nightclub culture in L.A. It explores the beauty and art of queerness that comes alive at night. For as long as they have existed, gay and lesbian bars have been an important pillar in the LGBTQ+ community. Though unstable, as many bars and nightclubs that were once frequented by queer people operated only for a finite amount of years, leaving behind brief memories and branded memorabilia, these spaces were pivotal in the average queer person’s experience; they provided a safe space to experience queer joy and intimacy free of homophobic judgment and hatred. These were places where respective members of the LGBTQ+ community could come together and create their own world. But alas, it was not utopia, nor was it heaven. It was reality, and issues of racism and sexism plagued many popular bars and caused others to open, albeit briefly, to appeal to specific niches. LGBTQ+ bars haven’t gone extinct, but their progression into mainstream culture has largely excluded members of the community to appease a white and heteronormative public. Coming Out At Night explores the transient nature of queer bar and nightclub history, as well as the constant struggle the LGBTQ+ community faces to find and create a safe space for themselves.
