Writing Home: Esther McCoy and the Language of American Modern Design
Please join us at Artists Space: Books and Talks for a film screening and panel discussion on the occasion of our debut book title, Piecing Together Los Angeles: An Esther McCoy Reader. The evening will include a screening of Dodge House 1916 (1965), a short film written and produced by Esther McCoy as part of her campaign to preserve one of California architect Irving Gill’s great houses. More info about the film can be found here. Following the film, writer Susan Morgan (editor of Piecing Together Los Angeles); architecture and design critic Alexandra Lange (author, Writing About Architecture: Mastering the Language of Buildings and Cities); and artist Andy Spence will discuss the film as well as McCoy’s extensive writing life. From fiction for The New Yorker to seminal essays on new architectural forms, McCoy charted the design-driven optimism of of postwar Los Angeles, articulating the concepts and vibrant character of West Coast modernism as it was being created.
