The Sick Shall Inherit the Earth
by Emma Dexter
Thirty years before the Palisades and Eaton fires started in Los Angeles, Todd Haynes introduced us to Carol, a wealthy and environmentally-afflicted Valley housewife played by Julianne Moore, in his 1995 film "Safe." It is difficult, within the film, to make clear separations between where domestic spaces end and medical spaces start. Chasing a diagnosis for her mysterious illness, Carol floats aimlessly across Southern California's Sanitarium Belt, residing in the buckle. Emma Dexter explores architectures of illness and health in and around Los Angeles, from the postmodern interiors and midcentury retreat of Haynes' cinematic universe in "Safe" to Neutra's Lovell Health House in Los Feliz and the ruins of Rockhaven Sanitarium outside Glendale.
