Thomas Lawson’s review of The Spiritual in Art (1986) at LACMA

In the 1986-7 winter edition of LA Weekly, East of Borneo Editor-in-Chief Thomas Lawson was invited to review The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting 1890-1985 (1986) at LACMA, curated by its first curator of 20th century art, Maurice Tuchman. Lawson’s criticisms joined the consensus of those who found the exhibition a failure, yielding greater shortcomings than breakthroughs by way of its exclusionary and shortsighted curation, breadth, and execution in its interpretation of spirituality—signaling an even greater detriment compounded by the museum’s own agenda.
