Between Art and So-Called Life: On Lenard Smith’s Fortuitous Encounters
by Georgia Lassner
Georgia Lassner lent her home to Ghanaian-American photographer Lenard Smith as an artist residency in 2020. Much of what emerged from that time, six years later, was included in his debut institutional solo exhibition “Fortuitous Encounters” at the California Museum of Photography. In these photographs, the sum of mundane objects—many of them from Lassner's garage (rotting lemons, soiled rubber gloves, loose wiffle balls)—becomes greater than its parts, alchemizing into a visual gestalt that unanchors her relationship between ownership and identity.
