Sir Lady Java Drag Show Ad, 1971

Sir Lady Java was a Los Angeles local drag queen and activist.

She was notorious for her performances as well as her activism against Rule 9, a L.A. ordinance that required bar owners to get permission from the Board in order to host drag performances.

Rule 9 was enforced from 1967-1969. Unsurprisingly, permission from the Board was extremely difficult to obtain, and the rule effectively halted public expression of drag and criminalized transgender people.
